Studio portrait of 3340 Sergeant (Sgt) Stanley Sale Hambridge, 50th Battalion from Unley, South Australia. A 33 year old miner prior to enlisting on 23 July 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Sergeant with the 11th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 27 October 1915 aboard HMAT Benalla. On arrival in Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion and reverted to the rank of Private. Two months later, he was promoted to Lance Corporal and a month later to Corporal (Cpl). In March 1916 he proceeded to France where he was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 16 August 1916. Cpl Hambridge is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
