Portrait of 3013 Private (Pte) William Lockhart Bronner Hope, 6th Battalion. A 23 year old compositor from St Kilda, Victoria prior to enlisting on 13 July 1915, Pte Hope embarked for overseas service with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard RMS Osterley on 29 September 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he transferred to the 1st Australian Camel Battalion, was promoted to Corporal and reported as missing in action on 19 April 1917. A subsequent court of enquiry determined that he had been killed in action at Gaza, Syria, aged 25. Having no known grave he is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
