Description

Portrait of 3075 Private (Pte) Thomas William Kelly, 13th Battalion from Gilgandra, NSW. A 26 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 16 July 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 10th Reinforcements from Sydney, NSW aboard HMAT Ballarat (A70) on 6 September 1915. Following further training in Egypt, he proceeded to the Western Front in France with the 13th Battalion in June 1916. Pte Kelly was killed in action on 4 February 1917 at Gueudecourt, France and is buried in the Bancourt British Cemetery, Picardie, France. His brother, 749 Pte Frederick Kelly, 3rd Battalion was killed in action at Gallipoli on 7 August 1915. [See image H06370.]
