Description

Studio portrait of Lieutenant Stanley Towns, 31st Battalion from Prahran, Victoria. A 20 year old clerk prior to enlisting in the AIF on 9 July 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Sergeant (service number 797) with D Company from Melbourne on 9 November 1915 aboard HMAT Wandilla. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant on 16 August 1916 and to Lieutenant (Lt) on 26 November 1916. Lt Towns was awarded a Military Cross for gallantry as an officer in charge of a fighting patrol at Bapaume, France between 14 and 17 March 1917 and returned to Australia on 28 June 1919.
