Studio portrait of 1726 Corporal (Cpl) Leslie Norman Walton, 43rd Battalion from Torrensville, South Australia. A 27 year old clerk and storekeeper prior to enlisting on 20 March 1916, he embarked for overseas as a Private with the 1st Reinforcements from Adelaide on 9 June 1916 aboard HMAT Afric. After joining the 43rd Battalion in England, he deployed with them to France where he was promoted to Lance Corporal on 3 February 1917 and to Corporal on 15 July 1917. Cpl Walton was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
