Cawthorn, Charles Frederick Cawthorn
Collection relating to the military service in South Africa (Boer War) of 268 Trooper (Tpr) Charles Frederick Rivers Cawthorn who served with the 2nd Tasmanian Imperial Bushmen from 1901-1902. The main item in the collection is an original handwritten diary kept by Tpr Cawthorn from the time he embarked on the troopship Chicago on 27 March 1901. The entries are very detailed and descriptive. Also includes his original Discharge Certificate, a reference written in July 1902 by Lt Col E.T Watchorn recommending Charles Cawthorn for '...any position of trust.', and a Diamond Jubilee souvenir Christmas card from The South African War Veterans Association. Added to the collection in September 2012 was a bound typescript of Tpr Cawthorn's original diary, transcribed and edited by his grand-daughter, Sally Steel in 2003. The typescript includes an index, a Nominal Roll of the 2nd Tasmanian Imperial Bushmen, and additional information about the war in South Africa, obtained from various published sources.
