Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 29 Sergeant (Sgt) Edgar Stanley Beard MM, 38 Battalion, and the Second World War service of VX21646 Gunner (Gnr) Selwyn Lloyd Beard, 2/12 Field Regiment and VX122438 Corporal (Cpl) James Evans, 24 Battalion. Items relating to Sgt Beard comprise his original handwritten diary from January 1916 to December 1917, typed transcript of the diary, postcard sent by Sgt Beard in 1916, and a copy of a portrait photograph of Sgt Beard in uniform. The diary transcript was compiled by Mrs Mavis Parks, daughter of Edgar Stanley Beard. Item relating to Gnr Selwyn Beard is a black and white photocopy of a letter dated 18 September 1945 he wrote to his cousin Mavis, in which he describes the surrender of Japanese forces in the Parar area of Borneo. Item relating to Cpl Evans is a black and white photocopy of a letter dated 4 February 1945 he wrote to his niece Mavis, in which he writes about a battalion sports carnival held the previous day. Cpl Evans was killed in action in Bougainville on 18 April 1945.
