Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX43008 Private (Pte) Alan Thomas Murnane who served with 2/21 Australian Infantry Battalion, which later became part of Gull Force. Comprises original handwritten diary kept by Pte Murnane from May 1940 until his return to Australia in October 1945, including his experience as a prisoner of war of the Japanese on Ambon and later Hainan. Also includes a typed transcript of the diary, titled 'One man's war', an additional bound and illustrated typescript which includes several pages of family history and biographical information, and a black and white photocopy of Pte Murnane's service records obtained from the Central Army Records Office in 1986. The additional typescript was compiled in 1988 by Doreen Johnstone (see Murnane), the sister of Pte Alan Murnane. Doreen Johnstone's transcript, and the original handwritten diary, were added to the collection in September 2012.
