Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 19623 Sergeant Arthur Gordon Pengilly, 8th Australian Field Artillery Brigade, AIF, and the Crimean War service of Wheel Driver Jas Burrow, 2nd Division, British Army. Collection consists of an original handwritten diary kept by Sergeant Pengilly during the First World War, and describing his service in France and leave in the United Kingdom; an original handwritten letter written by Wheel Driver Burrow and relating to the campaign in Crimea, particularly at Sebastapol, dated February 1855; and black and white photocopies of both the diary and letter. The diary covers Pengilly's embarkation aboard SS Medic, a burial at sea, training in England, hospitalisation, the death of 355 Private William Pengilly, gas warfare, heavy shelling and engagements with the enemy, casualties, his leave, and working with German prisoners. At the back of the diary there is an unrelated entry written by Thirza Reynolds containing details about life aboard the ship "Clyde" en route from England to Australia, dated 1876.
