Description

Collection relating to the service of Private Thomas Mitchell in the 2/5 Australian Independant Company (later known as 2/5 Australian Commando Squadron) in New Guinea in the Wau, Bulolo and Markham Valley areas and on Borneo during the Second World War. Collection includes: various personal papers and official reports related to his service; news clippings; copy of hand drawn map of Huon Gulf region of New Guinea; Japanese magazine; various Government publications; unit newsletter "Morotai News", 11 February 1946; unit newsletter "Maknews"; notebook containing names of prisoners at old Dutch Barracks Maccassar, 1945-46; "D" troop roll book from Balikpapan; photographs; handwritten and typescript copy of personal account of his service (annotated, with various inserts, clippings, maps, etc). This account includes comments on the Army, decision makers, treatment of New Guinea natives and secret gas experiments.
