Collection includes letter to his brother Joseph, mainly discussing family matters & Hodgkinson's work with training naval cadets, mimeographed copies of ship's orders, and a copy of a report into an incident involving HMAS Australia on 19 December 1914.

Biographical note: Lieutenant Samuel Charles Lindsay Hodgkinson, HMAS Australia, who on 1 August 1915, died at the Royal Naval Hospital, South Queensferry, near Edinburgh, Scotland. Other biographical details concerning him are: born Baslow, Derbyshire, England; educated at Lady Manners' School, Bakewell, Derbyshire, was an RNR officer for several years prior to May 1912, when presumably he joined the RAN; age at time of death, 28.
