Lieutenant Colonel Cyril Brudenell Bingham White works at a table at the entrance to his dugout. White served in the Boer War with the 1st Australian Commonwealth Horse; after that he spent two years at the British Staff College for officers in Camberley near London, the first Australian to win a place there, then trained troops and officers in England and Ireland for three years. When the First World War broke out he was Director of Military Operations in Australia; he was then appointed Chief Of Staff of the 1st Division and was the right hand man for General Bridges and then General Birdwood, with responsibility for the operations and organisation of the Australian forces.
