Collection relating to the service of 2nd Lieutenant John Bain Moncrieff, 5 Light Horse Regiment and 13 Infantry Brigade/13 Machine Gun Company, Egypt, France, 1915-1916. Collection consists of seven letters written by Moncrieff to his family in Queensland.

History / Summary

Biographical note: Lieutenant John Bain Moncrieff, 13 Machine Gun Company, AIF, who on 3 September 1916 was killed in action in front of Mouquet Farm (Pozieres). Other biographical details concerning him are: grazier, of Mitchell, Queensland; born Moonta, South Australia; educated at St. Peter's College, Adelaide; joined the AIF on 28 September 1914 and served in Gallipoli with the 5th Light Horse Regiment, being transferred to the 13th Machine Gun Company early in 1916 during the reorganization in Egypt of the AIF, and given his commission. Age at time of death, 28 years. Son of Samuel Stephenson Moncrieff and Isabella Moncrieff, of Killarney, Queensland.
