Collection relating to the service of Able Seaman Sidney Edwin Staines, HMAS Berrima, at sea, New Britain, 1914. Collection consists of a photostat copy of a diary kept by AS Sidney Staines while on active service during 1914. Collection is notable for its first-hand account of the attack at Kaba Kaul which led to Australia's first casualties of the war, and for its eye-witness account of the public flogging of three Germans, carried out at Rabaul, New Britain, 30 November 1914.
