Are you helping your oversea pals in the final knockout?
South African First World War poster depicting a South African Brigade officer standing over a German infantryman. The infantryman cowers below the officer, who holds a smoking revolver in his right hand. In the background is a burning city as bombs continue to explode around it. Unlike other dominions supporting Great Britain in France such as Canada and New Zealand, South Africa did not have conscription for overseas service, and recruitiment posters such as this were particularly vital to its involvement in the war against Germany. The foot caption translates as "Get going Springboks". In a generic sense, the term 'springboks' refers to a team or group representing South Africa in an international forum. More specifically, the Springboks are the South African national rugby union team, first nicknamed as such during the 1906/07 tour of Britain.
