Shoulder strap for the 68th Field Artillery Regiment. Field grey wool strap with red felt applique bursting grenade and chain stitched number '68'. With the strap is a handwritten note, in indelible pencil on piece of grid paper, that reads: '68th F.Art.Rgt. / 24th Res. Div. / captured by / 4th Div. 18/6/18 / at Cherisy-Gallial'. 'Cherisy-Gallial' has been crossed out at a later date and replaced with 'Cerisy Gailly' above it in different handwriting.

History / Summary

Single shoulder straps were routinely removed from dead or captured Germans for intelligence purposes, so that the names of the units opposing the Allied forces could be established.

This shoulder strap from a member of the German 68th Field Artillery Regiment was captured by members of the AIF and sent to the Australian Corps Headquarters, under the command of Lieutenant General Sir John Monash.
