"Hey fellows!"
United States First World War poster depicts a soldier holding aloft a book, while a sailor reads sitting down. The poster appeals for donations to buy books for American soldiers to read while fighting in Europe. The soldier and sailor are placed in front of a vivid orange background; the title, in white against the orange background, runs from the upper left corner to the upper right poster. This poster was produced by the American Library Association: a message in white and black text occupying the centre right of the poster reads: 'Your money brings the book when we need when we want it.' John E. Sheridan (1880– 1948) was an illustrator well known in his lifetime for his cover art for 'The Saturday Evening Post', his illustrations for Collier's Weekly and Ladies' Home Journal, and his commercial advertisements. Sheridan attended Georgetown University in the late 1890s, graduating in 1901. During the First World War, he created many patriotic posters in support of the United States' war effort as part of the committee of artists that also included Charles Dana Gibson (creator of the Gibson Girl) and James Montgomery Flagg (creator of the iconic Uncle Sam recruiting poster). Sheridan went on to work as art editor for the 'Washington Times' and for the 'San Francisco Chronicle' in the 1930s.
