Cabinet plate
Australian Federation commemorative cabinet plate made by Doulton & Co. in Burslem England. Designed in 1900 by John Slater and John Shorter (Doulton's Australian agent). Printed in sepia on a cream earthenware this design features a central cameo portrait of Queen Victoria flanked by an Australian Light horseman wearing a slouch hat to her left and a British Infantryman to her right. Beneath them is a banner with the words 'Australian Federation 1901'. Cameo portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwell and York are positioned centre left and centre right respectively. Top centre are cameo portraits of Lord Hopetoun and Sir Henry Parkes. In the lower centre within a banner is a quote by Joseph Chamberlain, Secretary of State for the Colonies ' May the union between the Colonies and the mother-land now cemented by their blood, be for ever maintained'. The portraits are linked by ribbons and floral swags of roses and waratahs.
