Description

Decorative riding crop with a whalebone core covered with elaborately woven waxed string. Crop has a leather flapper and an ornate embossed silver head in a thistle pattern. Silver band at the bottom of the head is stamped 'MERLE & Co WHALEBONE LINED'.

History / Summary

Acquired as a souvenir by 1575 Sergeant Marseilles Hayden John Winter who served with 6 Light Horse Regiment, AIF. He enlisted on 24 September 1915 and returned to Australia on 2 August 1919. His French mother chose his first given name.
