History / Summary
Awarded to 6080 Private John Cameron Friend. Friend was born in 1892 and enlisted on 12 September 1916. He served with 22 Battalion and returned to Australia on 12 March 1918. On 14 May 1917 Friend was recommended for the Military Medal. His recommendation reads 'For conspicuous gallantry and initiative in the assault on the Bullecourt trenches on 3rd. May 1917 when he salved a Lewis Gun and some panniers from one of our casualties under heavy fire and by skilful use of the same kept down the enemy snipers who were picking off our wounded.'
