Description

Photomontage combining four individual portraits of the four Hird brothers of Ashfield, NSW. Identified left to right: 2423 Private Edward James Hird, 2nd Battalion; 2651 Private Hector McDonald Octavious Hird, 30th Battalion; 3070 Private Arthur Septimus Hird, 2nd Battalion; 19228 Private Alfred Ibbotsen Hird. Two of the brothers returned early to Australia (probably after wounding or illness), re-enlisting to go overseas again. Edward James Hird re-enlisted on 10 April 1916, serving with the number 6142 in the 13th Battalion. Hector McDonald Octavius Hird re-enlisted on 31 October 1916, serving with the number 6331 with the 19th Battalion. Alfred Ibbotsen Hird served in Australia and does not appear on the Nominal Roll, probably indicating he transferred too late to serve overseas (although he had a service number allocated).
