Certificates, letters, commissioning papers, signal forms and photographs of Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Robert Smith (1910-1918). Includes material relating to his service in Europe with 5 Brigade, 2 Division during First World War. Correspondents include Gellibrand and Field Marshal Lord Birdwood congratulating Brig Gen Smith on the award of his DSO. Of note are two signals: one dated 16 April 1917 from General Gough congratulating Brig Gen Smith on the handling of his reserves that morning (in connection with the German attack at Lagnicourt); the second, dated 20 September 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres, expresses Birdwood's pleasure in the 2 Division's capture of ANZAC redoubt (verso inscribed: 'I captured Anzac Redoubt with 18th Bn. 20.9.17').
