Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of L Welchman, believed to be 216 Private (Pte) Lawrence Welchman, 6th Reinforcements, 3rd Field Artillery Brigade (3rd FAB), of Melbourne, Victoria. Pte Welchman enlisted on 12 May 1915 and embarked for overseas with the 6th Reinforcements of the 3rd Field Ambulance from Melbourne on 17 June 1915 aboard HMAT Wandilla (A62). After serving at Gallipoli and in the Middle East, he embarked from Egypt aboard HMAT Euripides and returned to Australia on 18 January 1917 as a member of the 7th Sanitary Section. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
