Studio portrait of 10445 Private (Pte) Henry Hooper Matthews, 2nd Reinforcements, 4th Field Artillery Brigade, of Heidelberg, Vic. Pte Matthews enlisted on 25 October 1915 and embarked aboard HMAT Afric on 5 January 1916. On 4 July 1916 he was killed in action at Armentieres in France while serving with the 6th Machine Gun Company. Prior to his enlistment in the AIF, Pte Matthews served as a Junior Cadet at the Melbourne Church of England Grammar School where he was a member of the rifle team. During his Law Degree at the University of Melbourne he served as a Senior Cadet and a member of the rifle team. Two of his brothers were killed in action: 475 Pte Arthur Francis Matthews, 6th Machine Gun Company, was wounded in Gallipoli and killed in France on 4 July 1916; 2nd Lieutenant Frederick William Hordern Matthews, was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) in September 1916. He was killed in action on 8 November 1916 at Flers in France.
