Description

The original grave and cross of Captain (Capt) Norman Gibbins, 55th Battalion, of Ipswich, Qld (formerly of Ararat, Vic, and NSW at enlistment). He left Australia with the 3rd Battalion and was Mentioned in Despatches for conspicuous gallantry at the landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Captain Gibbins was killed in action on 20 July 1916 at Fleurbaix, France. A small plaque hangs from the cross with a message from his sister: "With my soul's homage and my heart's utmost love to my beloved and deeply mourned brother. Violet Gibbins".
