Gum leaf with an ink inscription reading 'Gum leafs (sic) from the bank of the Nile 1/1/16 Maadi'.
This gum leaf was collected in Egypt by Lieutenant John Henry Jose. An architectural modeller from Perth, WA, Jose enlisted, aged 47, in the Australian Imperial Force in September 1915. He was appointed Second Lieutenant of 6 Field Artillery Brigade on 20 October and then promoted to lieutenant on 1 November. He sailed for Egypt aboard HMAT Persic on the 22nd of that month. He transferred to 5 Division in March 1916 and then joined 5 Divisional Ammunition Column (DAC) on 17 January 1917. Jose was promoted to captain on 1 September 1917 and commanded No. 1 Section of 5 DAC. He requested a discharge in early 1918 for family reasons and embarked for return to Australia in March that year. His commission was terminated in Australia on 28 May 1918.
