The cry of the mothers
Description
Australian First World War recruitment poster referring to widely reported atrocities committed by Germans against Belgians in late 1914. A grieving mother is depicted with her arms raised, face etched with defiance. Her exposed right breast and torn clothing may allude to the allegations of rape that were being broadcast throughout the Allied nations. Her two children lie dead at her feet. The image occupies the centre of the poster. A light brown border surrounds the image, and the red text is positioned across the top and bottom sections.
