Description

Officers khaki service dress trousers. The trousers have a concealed button fly, side pockets and turned up cuffs. The waistband is notched at the back and has two buttons at the back and four buttons at the front for attaching braces. The centre back of the trousers has two fabric tabs, one with a metal buckle, for tightening the fit. A maker's label is sewn inside the back of the waistband with the name 'E.T. Towner' typed below.

History / Summary

Associated with Major Edgar Thomas Towner. Towner was born at Glencoe Station near Blackall on the Barcoo River, Queensland on 19 April 1890. He worked on his father's property until his enlistment on 4 January 1915. Towner served as a Lieutenant with 2 Machine Gun Battalion, 2 Division and won the Victoria Cross at Mont St Quentin on 1 September 1918. He had previously won the Military Cross for his actions during fighting near Morlancourt on the night of 10-11 June 1918. After World War One Towner returned to Queensland and worked Kaloola, a grazing property near Longreach. At the outbreak of World War Two Towner was appointed as a Captain in the 26 Battalion of the Citizen Military Forces. He then became second in command with the temporary rank of Major. He retired on 21 January 1942.
