Description

Group portrait of seven officers who returned to Melbourne, sick or wounded from Gallipoli. Back row, left to right: possibly Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) George Robert Gregg (8th Battalion (Bn)); unidentified Second Lieutenant. Front row: unidentified Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) or Major, possibly 2nd Lt Norman Gorton Booth (14th Bn); possibly Captain (Capt) Robert Dickson (8th Bn); Major (Maj) Ivie Blezard (7th Bn) and Lieutenant (Lt) Charles Frederick Broad (6th Bn). Maj Blezard, Lt Broad, 2nd Lt Gregg and 2nd Lt Booth returned aboard HMAT Themistocles, disembarking at Melbourne on 10 September 1915. Maj Blezard and Lt Broad were among a group of returned soldiers who attended a meeting in Melbourne on 16 September 1915 to form a Returned Soldiers’ Association in Victoria. They were appointed vice presidents along with fellow returned officers (not believed to be in this group portrait) Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) James Michael Semmens, Lt Col Robert Morrison McVea, Capt Alexander Earl Greig (5th Bn), Lt Albert Richard Heighway (7th Bn), Lt Walter Tasman Conder (7th Bn), Lt George Herbert Capes (5th Bn) and Lt Charles Gordon Pascoe (5th Bn).
