Description

Studio portrait of two soldiers. One is 923 Private (Pte) William Michael Nelson, 3rd Reinforcements, 13th Light Horse Regiment, of Moondarra, Vic. Pte Nelson enlisted on 28 May 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Kyarra on 20 August 1915. He was appointed temporary Bombardier (Bdr) on 9 September 1917. On 22 September 1917 he received a gun shot wound to the left leg and was admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital. Bdr Nelson returned to Australia on 23 March 1919 as a member of the 10th Field Artillery Brigade. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
