Description
A family group of local people laden with their possessions walk past 3791916 Trooper (Tpr) Arthur John 'Arfer' Booker (left) and 16782 Sergeant (Sgt) Jack ‘Jock’ McConnell (right, partly obscured), operator and crew commander of a Centurion Mk 5/1 tank, call sign three three alpha (33A), Army registration number 169106. The driver of the tank (unseen) was 3791920 Tpr Michael 'Mick' Hannaford. The tank has the nickname ‘Smoken Jenny’ written on the side above the tracks. It is parked on the side of the road near the town of Long Dien. The people of were being evacuated prior to an attack on Viet Cong forces in the town.
(Tpr Hannaford was fatally wounded on 14 December 1968 when the tank he was driving, detonated a mine.)
