Collection related to the service of 704 Ernest Charles Barnes
Description
The ruined village in northern France. Many of the buildings have been reduced to rubble; fragmentary walls of others are still standing. On the left two unidentified soldiers are visible. Hermies was one of several outpost villages that stood between the Allies and the heavily defended Hindenburg line to which the Germans had retreated; the Australians attacked and captured it on 8-9 April 1917. (From the collection of 704 Driver Ernest Charles Barnes who served with the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, 21st Howitzer Brigade and 2nd Field Artillery Brigade.)
