Description
The facade of a fire damaged building in a quarter of Cairo known as the Haret el Wasser, but referred to by the soldiers as 'The Wozzer' or 'The Wassa'. In April 1915, aggrieved Australian and New Zealand soldiers had run amok, throwing bedding, mattresses and clothing from several brothels into the street and burning them. The British military police were summoned to an ugly scene, although most of those present were merely spectators; the police averted serious trouble by withdrawing. Members of the 2nd Australian Division were involved in the 'Second Battle of the Wozzer' in August 1915.
