THE ENEMY WERE RETREATING AFTER LOSING 250 MEN IN A BITTER BATTLE WITH THE AUSTRALIAN FORCE AT LONG TAN, IN PHUOC TUY PROVINCE DURING OPERATION SMITHFIELD. THE SEARCHING AUSTRALIANS FOUND HASTILY DUG GRAVES AND OTHER EVIDENCE OF THE LARGE SCALE VC RETREAT.
