Description
Studio portrait of 466 Private (Pte) Harry George Sommerville, 22nd Battalion, of St Kilda, Vic. Pte Sommerville enlisted on 5 January 1915 and embarked aboard HMAT Ulysses on 8 May 1915. On 18 July 1915 he died of diptheria in Cairo, Egypt. Two of his cousins 528 Sergeant George Davidson Sommerville, 7th Battalion, of Sunshine, Vic and 1164 Pte Angus Ewen McLennan, 24th Battalion, of Tatura, Vic, were killed in 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Another cousin 1223 Pte Robert Alexander McColl, 24th Battalion, of Moe, Vic, was killed in October 1917 in the Ypres area of Belgium.
