Description

Studio portrait of 1664a Private (Pte) William Henry (Harry) Blencowe, 2nd Reinforcements, 21st Battalion, of Fitzroy, Vic. Pte Blencowe lowered his age from 50 to 44 upon enlistment on 25 February 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Demosthenes on 16 July 1915. On 2 Sept 1915, both Pte Harry Blencowe and his son, 1070 Pte Frederick William Blencowe were en route to Gallipoli when their troopship, HMT Southland, was torpedoed in the Aegean Sea near Agistrati Island. Pte Harry Blencowe suffered burns to his left hand and was deafened in the left ear by this event. He was invalided to Australia and medically discharged on 10 July 1916. Pte Harry Blencowe died of complications, aged 53 on 6 December 1918. His son, Lt Frederick William Blencowe MM returned to Australia on 15 May 1919.
