Description

Studio portrait of Private Lampard. It is probably 1136 Private (Pte) James Lampard, 8th Reinforcements, 8th Light Horse Regiment or possibly 4233 Pte Alexander Lampard, 13th Reinforcements, 5th Battalion. An orchardist from Dooen, Victoria, 1136 Pte Lampard enlisted on 29 June 1915 with his cousins 1134 Pte Robert Henry Hunt (see DA10002) and 1110 Pte Frederick Lampard Hunt (see H06243). They embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Kyarra on 20 August 1915. James Lampard returned to Australia on 6 September 1919. An engine driver from Edenhope, Victoria, 4233 Pte Alexander Lampard enlisted on 3 August 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Demosthenes on 29 December 1915. He later served as a sergeant and returned to Australia on 12 June 1919. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
