Description
Studio portrait of 1243 Private (Pte) William John Gardner, 9th Reinforcements, 4th Light Horse Regiment, of Werribee, Vic. Prior to his enlistment on 19 July 1915 in the AIF, he served with the 69th Infantry, Citizens Military Forces. Pte Gardiner embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Hororata on 27 September 1915. He died of wounds on 9 May 1917 at Poperinge, Belgium, while serving as a trooper with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment.
