Description

Studio portrait of 303 Corporal (Cpl) Percival Campbell Rowan, A Company, 3rd Pioneer Battalion, of Terip Terip, Vic. Cpl Rowan enlisted on 29 July 1915 and embarked aboard HMAT Wandilla in Melbourne on 6 June 1916 as a sergeant. On 23 December 1916 he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant. He was promoted to lieutenant on 4 July 1917. On 8 March 1919 he was awarded a Military Cross for his work on 29 September 1918, while acting as company commander. The recommendation for this award states that Lieutenant Rowan 'showed great coolness and devotion to duty, on the main road between Ronssoy and Bony, under heavy shell and machine gun fire throughout the day.' He returned to Australia on 22 August 1919.
