Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of Captain (Capt) Joseph Ringland Anderson, Australian Army Medical Corps. A medical practitioner from Kew, Vic prior to enlistment, Capt Anderson embarked from Sydney on HMAT Ulysses on 9 May 1917. On 18 September 1918 whilst attached to the 45th Battalion he was awarded the Military Cross "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack West of Bellenglise....During a protracted advance this officer established his R.A.P. well forward in the open, and continued with great courage to attend the wounded under heavy shell fire. His splendid efforts saved many lives, and inspired all the men in the vicinity." He returned to Australia on 15 January 1920. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
