Description

Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Harold Valentine Wortley, 29th Battalion. A storekeeper from Kilmore, Vic prior to enlistment, 2nd Lt Wortley embarked with the 7th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 4 July 1916. Whilst serving in France he was promoted to Lieutenant and returned to Australia on 20 August 1919. He later went on to serve in the Second World War as a Lieutenant in the Australian Army Ordnance Corps. See also DA15135. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
