Description
Studio portrait of 440 (previously 1056) Private (Pte) Arthur Aplin Coles, 1st Reinforcements, No 1 Squadron, Wagon Section, Australian Half Flight Corps (India), originally of Hampstead, London, England. Pte Coles originally enlisted on 7 December 1914 in Alexandria, Egypt. He was a civilian working as a butcher on the transport ship SS Omrah when he was asked by Major William Cavendish Harvey (VD), 9th Battalion, to join the AIF. Pte Cole was a member of the 9th Battalion when he returned to Australia on 19 January 1916. He re-enlisted on 10 May 1916 and embarked aboard RMS Morea, with the Australian Flying Corps (AFC), in Melbourne on 30 May 1916. He returned to Australia as a corporal on 1 May 1918.
