Description

Studio portrait of 6767 Private (Pte) Francis James Fitzpatrick, 6th Battalion (left) and 6610 Pte Stephen Claude Wisdom, 14th Battalion. Pte Fitzpatrick, a printer from Shepparton, Victoria prior to enlistment, embarked with the 22nd Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Ulysses on 25 October 1916. After serving in France, he returned to Australia on 4 July 1919. Pte Wisdom, a labourer from Bay View via Poowong, Victoria prior to enlistment, embarked with the 21st Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Nestor on 2 October 1916. Later gassed, he transferred to the Australian Veterinary Section at Calais and returned to Australia on 19 April 1919. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. See also DA16240 and DA16241.
