Description

Studio portrait of 6599 Private (Pte) Thomas Rex Vipond, 5th Battalion. A porter from Essendon, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Vipond embarked along with his brother 6598 Pte John Howard Vipond with the 25th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Nestor on 2 October 1916. Whilst serving in France, he was wounded in action and evacuated to England. Following his recovery he rejoined his unit as a Driver and returned to Australia on 22 August 1919. Pte John Vipond returned to Australia on 10 September 1917. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. See also DA16279.
