Description

Portrait of Major H D K (Maj) Macartney, Australian Flying Corps. An officer with the Permanent Forces, Maj Henry Dundas Keith Macartney enlisted on 6 January 1916. He embarked with Headquarters, No. 1 Squadron from Melbourne aboard HMAT Orsova (A67) on 16 March 1916. In June Macartney was transferred to the 2nd Divisional Artillery where he commanded the 15th Field Battery. In October he was promoted to temporary Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 7th Field Artillery Brigade. In January 1918 he was appointed General Staff Officer, Grade 2, Headquarters, Australian Corps and later the commander of the 3rd Army Brigade, Australian Field Artillery. With the temporary rank of Colonel, Macartney was made temporary commander of the Royal Artillery, 3rd Division. He returned to Australia in April 1919. For his war service Macartney was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
