Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Portrait of Private (Pte) A A Coutts and H G E group. Coutts is probably 12792 Driver Alexander Alan Coutts, a bank clerk from Serpentine, Victoria. He embarked from Melbourne with the Army Service Corps aboard HMAT Borda on 20 October 1916. He returned to Australia with the 2nd Australian Divisional Train on 7 July 1919. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
