Description

Studio portrait of 3039 Private (Pte) Thomas Patrick Hanrahan, 14th Battalion. A fitter from Albert Park, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Hanrahan embarked with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Port Lincoln on 16 October 1916. Later transferring to the 46th Battalion, he was wounded in action. Subsequently developing tachycardia he returned to Australia and was medically discharged, On 6 November 1920 he died in Austin Hospital and was buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton, Victoria. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
