Description
A fatigue party of the 22nd Battalion, road mending between Montauban and Mametz, having their midday meal by the roadside. During the brief rests of the battalions from the line through the winter of 1916-1917, the days were given to the removal of mud from the roads, and the nights spent in hut camps. Identified are: 951 Sergeant R. N. Smith (extreme left); 1123 Private John Simpson (fourth from left, facing camera with a half loaf of bread in his hand); 1551A Sergeant P. Taylor (second from right, facing camera).
