The remains of the railway station at Le Sars, after the German retirement. In 1919 a copy of this image was sent to the 22nd Battalion with a request for details. An unknown soldier replied on the official form "Throughout February 1917, the 22nd Battalion were in the front line opposite the Railway Station and Butte de Warlencourt. Many daring patrols were carried out around the railway station by Corporal H Wittner, who was eventually killed near this station whilst on this work." 3963 Hyman Wittner was born at Hariau ( Harlau ?) Roumania (Romania) in 1894 and with his family migrated to Australia c 1912. The family is thought to have changed their name from Myer. Wittner was killed in action on 21 February 1917 and has no known grave.
