Description

An improvised 'sleeper-log' road across a ditch near Bapaume. Following the retirement of the enemy and his destruction of bridges and culverts, our engineers had the large task of repairing the roads and tracks for traffic. In this instance, the Germans had demolished a culvert over a deep ditch, and as a temporary measure the log track was hurriedly made by the 7th Field Company of Australian Engineers. Identified, left to right: 7383 Sapper (Spr) L R Weidner; 7113 Spr N C ?Manning (foreground); 2717 Second Corporal A Lawson (smoking); 2650 Spr A E Bell (top right background, sitting down).
